The Social Relation to Reptiles and Amphibians

Boas and anacondas called "amarun" in Kichwa are distinguished from other all other kinds of snakes call machakuy (Napo) or palu (in Pastaza). Rainbow boas (ukumbi), pictured above, are masters of the manioc gardens. Anacondas are masters of the water world. Boa constrictors attract birds and are model land hunters. In dreams they appear as beautiful women or atractive men. People maintain ritual relations to these animals as bridges to more intimate relations with the plant and animal worlds they master.
