Bélgica Dagua, "The Strangler Fig Loved a Girl."
From interviews with Tod D. Swanson
Description

English Translation
This strangler-fig tree
in the beginning times it had been a person
a young man it had been
but like that
just like that, this tree had been lazy
when it was being a man
so being this lazy man
this- he being a young man
he (wanted) a woman, a young woman
taking and intending (a woman), he wanted
that one wanting (a woman) like this
the father had realized this, the father realizing this he spoke to his daughter:
"don't get married to that guy, that guy is a lazy man" (he's) saying
the father being stingy, he goes, taking (his daughter) to some other place
then a- at a village he had gone taking (her)
this strangler-fig man had arrived there also
the young man had searched
intending (to find) where she was
he had arrived there
and then when he had arrived there, the father saw (him)
(at night)
hiding (her) he had taken his daughter to another place
and there, arriving in some other place
being there
he (strangler fig man) is hearing this
and he had arrived there too, that strangler fig man when he was a human
arriving
there the father saw (him)
and then (at) night
taking his daughter to another place he had had gone, "he's not going to marry (my daughter)" he's saying, being stingy
and then like that they had gone, they had gone to every place
and this (strangler fig) man had gone following them
then
and the father, being stingy with his daughter like this, takes her and was going
taking (her), he's going
and the daughter will say:
"father" (she) had said "in vain you add places to go, we're going in circles" (she's) saying
"now I'm going to clear" (she had said) "a lot, a whole forest"
"I will clear it, I will chop down the trees"
"I will plant manioc"
"and that man"
"we will have called to him (inviting him) so that he may drink"
"and he will drink when we call him, I will make chicha and give him to drink"
"drinking, he'll be drunk, and he'll be like that, so that (we) can kill him" (she) had said this when she was wasn't able to take it anymore
she did not want that man
"so let's kill (him)" thus saying, with her father, they are conversing together (planning)
(she) had cleared a large area of this forest
when the forest was cleared she had said to her father:
"now you chop down the trees"
"and I will clear the agricultural field"
"I will bring little manioc sticks to plant" she had said
that daughter
so when the daughter had said that (her father) "I will now ascertain everything that needs to be chopped"
"and you now you clear the whole agricultural field"
and so having said that
the father then had chopped down the trees, from half, half of the agricultural field
and then apparently like that
this strangler-fig man
being a human, he had arrived where the father was chopping
and when he was arriving, the father had been chopping nonchalantly
and as he took his axe to chop
from behind tak! he (the strangler-fig man) grabbed him (the father) by the throat
and so doing in that way, then
the strangler-fig man killed the tree-chopping man (the father) there
and then
after he killed him
the daughter was clearing the agricultural field, he (strangler fig man) probably knew where the agricultural field was- and uh, he was going towards there
so this one goes there, he leaves behind the father
wanting (the daughter) he had followed her (stalking)
as a stalker
he arrived to where the daughter was
(the daughter) arrived to the house that her father had left there, she-, she alone
(she) sleeps
after having cleared the agricultural field
and like that, he arrived there
at night and had said
after arriving, he asked her: "why do you stay here having left your father?" thus saying, he had asked
and then (she replied): "my father (went) to cut down trees all by himself"
"if you really want me, why don't you go help my father cut down the trees?" thus she had said
and after she had spoke like this, (he replies): "your father would be very angry with me"
"for that reason, I did not help him" thus he had said
like that she thinks: "I will speak with him, and will have talked with him"
"and then him, here at night"
"fooling him, and leaving him, I will go, (after) making him sleep"
"he, my father, surely still lives" she was saying "perhaps"
that daughter
like that she was thinking
reportedly, in order to sleep, she had laid down, like this
and then having laid down
and then like that becomes as if asleep, pin! (closing eyes) she had laid (there)
and then, like this, he, with his hand, from there
his hand from here tsi! (slithers) from there tsi! (slithers) from here tsi! (slithers)
and she, like that- like that where she was laying down there, from here tsi! (slithers) from here tsi! (slithers)
and then, like that it is happening, like this, reportedly, then his-
this root this- like this one (here) reportedly
from his hand (the root) grows utsuuun! (extending)
and that- that woman (is being) taaayyy! (stuck-still), squeezing, he had killed her
this strangler-fig man
for that reason apparently he, that-
the tree that he has wanted, he hugs it
and he kills it
and saying like that, is how they would tell the story of this strangler-fig tree
(he) would tell this (story), the late
grandfather Salomón
he
from what's that place, from Sarayaku
we are told this by that old grandfather
that is what I know.
