That otter (pishni) was passing by, in the big river; the woman went to wait for him. Because the otter used to give her fish every time she arrived. When she arrived, he already had several fish prepared. When she arrived at her mother’s house, they offered her yuca chicha, but she didn’t drink it. They offered her an open mayto, but she didn’t want to eat that either. Then, they asked themselves: “If this man doesn’t eat, how are we going to keep him with us?” “No, mom, I’m not committed to him,” she told her mother. “You’re telling me this for no reason. I’m not committed to him. I said that because he loves me and gives me gifts,” she said. “I’m not with him, why do you say that?” When she said this, in his thoughts, the otter wanted to marry that woman, and that’s why he gave her those gifts. The young woman said: “Mom, I don’t want to, I don’t like that you talk about me,” and he became ashamed. Feeling ashamed, he said: “I felt that you loved me, I thought you loved me, that’s why I gave you those gifts.” “Now that you don’t want me, wherever I am eating, you will eat my leftovers when you turn into an eagle (mianka).” The otter said this angrily. He went up to eat on a small hill and from there threw the leftovers. She just cried (miaaa). Sad, she ate the leftovers of what he had eaten. These were the stories told about the otter. Since she didn’t love him, she transformed into an eagle. What he ate, the poor thing fed on his leftovers afterward. “When did she transform into an eagle? Since she became an eagle, the otter fished to give her gifts.” That’s why, until today, she still eats the otter’s leftovers. “And why didn’t the woman love him?” She didn’t love him; then her mother told her… He only ate raw food, and she told her mother. The woman had noticed that he ate everything uncooked. “That’s how he eats... so, how is he going to stay with us?” her mother said. “Mom, I’m not committed to him, why do you say I’m going to have something with him?” In his thoughts, the otter loved the eagle woman and wanted her to be his wife. She didn’t know why he gave her gifts; she thought he did it out of kindness. She imagined that. “I thought he was giving me gifts out of kindness. We’re eating, mom. He’s giving us gifts out of kindness. I don’t want him.” The otter said to her: “I thought I would marry you, that’s why I gave you fish. But now I see that you don’t want me.” “I’ll become an otter. When I’m an otter and eating, you will only eat my leftovers, because you don’t want me.” After saying that, he turned into an otter. Did she also become an eagle? If the woman turned into an eagle, is that why she’s still an eagle? The eagle ate the leftovers the otter had left her. Sometimes he left her a tail, other times the head of the fish. He left that for her and went away. Did she cry? She ate, crying and sad, because she didn’t want to be with him. That would be her suffering. This is the end of the story.

Spanish Translation

Entonces si tu no me quieres a mí.
