We call these leaves dormilona when babies can’t fall asleep. Newborn babies generally don’t sleep well. We take some leaves from this plant and place them under the pillow where the baby sleeps. This helps them fall asleep. When the baby is in the hammock, the leaves are placed under their head. That’s where babies usually sleep. For a baby who has trouble sleeping, this dormilona plant helps them rest. It is placed this way. When you touch it, it folds up and “falls asleep.” Just as the plant falls asleep, the baby should sleep the same way. The baby has to sleep just like this plant. The mother couldn’t do anything, since the baby wouldn’t stop crying. That’s why these leaves are usually placed, so the baby can sleep. In our culture, we say that this plant has semayuca. When the semayuca takes effect, these dormilona leaves are collected, rubbed between the hands with a bit of water, and placed over the fire. The water that gathers is then drunk when a woman is enchanted by semayuca—though it can also be a man who drinks it. This plant cuts the effect when someone is “dying of love” for another person. When a woman is enchanted by semayuca, is that when the spell ends? Yes, the spell ends when she drinks the water from this plant. A estas hojas les decimos dormilona cuando los bebés no logran dormir. Los bebés recién nacidos generalmente no pueden dormir bien. Tomamos algunas hojas de esta planta para ponerlas debajo de la almohada donde duerme el bebé. Con esto lo ayudan a dormir. Cuando está en la hamaca, le colocan las hojas debajo de su cabeza. Ahí es donde los bebés suelen dormir. Al bebé que tiene dificultades para dormir, esta planta dormilona lo ayuda a descansar. Se coloca de esta manera. Cuando lo tocas, se duerme de esa manera.
