Our children will no longer know the meat of the forest. For them, only drawings on paper will remain. They will only see the drawings that white people have painted; only there will they come to know the animals. That is why I say that our children will not truly come to know the animals of the forest.
That is why we must take care of it, but people usually do not listen. They pay no attention. They say that we speak for nothing, that animals cannot disappear, as if that could not happen.
I have traveled to several places and I have seen that there are almost no animals left. Once I went to Sucúa, to the town of Sucúa. There I participated in a training workshop about animals and the forest. People from different places came to talk and share knowledge about this.
In that place, the authorities told us that in ancient times the area was full of animals. There were many boas, peccaries, deer, and tapirs; in general, there was a great variety of wildlife.
Look now at how they are building ranches. Our parents destroyed many trees, and now we do not even have trees to build houses. They explained to us, pointing out the guarumo trees, that now practically only those remain. To clear land for cattle ranching, they cut down and destroyed most of the other trees.
It is not good to destroy. You must take good care of nature. When other people come and try to enter, raise cattle, and destroy the forest, that is not good.
Now, by raising cattle and killing that cattle, we feed ourselves with that, because there is no longer meat from the forest. That is what they told me. That is why, when I returned to my village, I told my people that we must take care of the forest and the rivers.
Kichwa Translation

Spanish Translation
Nuestros hijos ya no conocerán la carne de la selva. Para ellos, solo quedarán los dibujos en el papel.
Ellos solo verán los dibujos que la gente blanca ha pintado. Únicamente allí conocerán a los animales. Por eso digo que nuestros hijos no llegarán a conocer realmente a los animales de la selva.
Por eso debemos cuidar, pero la gente no suele escuchar; no hacen caso. Dicen que hablamos por gusto, que cómo van a desaparecer los animales, como si eso no pudiera suceder.
Yo he viajado a varios lugares y he visto que ya casi no hay animales. Una vez me fui a Sucúa, al pueblo de Sucúa.
Participé en un taller de capacitación acerca de los animales y la selva. Vinieron personas de diferentes lugares para conversar y compartir conocimientos sobre eso.

Miren ahora cómo están construyendo haciendas. Nuestros padres destruyeron muchos árboles y ahora no tenemos árboles ni siquiera para construir casas.
Ellos nos explicaban, mostrando los árboles de guarumo, que ahora prácticamente solo quedan esos. Para habilitar terrenos destinados a la ganadería fueron talando y acabando con la mayoría de los otros árboles.
No es bueno destruir. Ustedes deben cuidar bien la naturaleza. Cuando vengan otras personas a intentar ingresar, criar ganado y destruir la selva, eso no es bueno.
Ahora, al criar ganado y matar ese ganado, nos alimentamos de eso, porque ya no hay carne de la selva.
Eso me contaron a mí. Por eso, cuando volví a mi pueblo, le dije a mi gente que debemos cuidar la selva y los ríos.
